Sport
This year, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in Blackstone sport, regardless of how good you are. Each Wednesday afternoon, Blackstone fields male, female and sometimes mixed teams in the University-wide interfaculty sports competition, which has a strong focus on participation, with a number of purely social divisions in most of the sports. We also have a number of ‘grudge matches’, and other sporting afternoons throughout the year. The games are fun, highly sociable and a great way to meet people you might not ordinarily get a chance to.
The 2011 Blackstone Sports Reps are:
* Ben Tomasi
* Anna Crosby
Contact us at email hidden; JavaScript is required, find us on Facebook (Blackstone Sports), or come and chat to us in the courtyard or on the sideline (where sports reps typically spend a lot of the time, leaving the actual sport to people far more capable).
Interfaculty Sport
Inter-fac sport, while spirited and competitive, is more importantly about getting in and having a go. It’s a great way to make friends and meet new people, as well as keeping fit and learning new sports. Many of the sports have multiple divisions, so the focus can be on participation and socialising, rather than being super-competitive. That said, we want to retain the Goyder Cup (men’s) and win the Strickland Cup (women’s) after being robbed last year, so if you have mad skills at any of the sports we play throughout the year don’t be afraid to come down and get involved, we will be eternally grateful (provided, obviously, that we win).
Grudge Matches
The Blackstone Society has a long and rich history at UWA, and it’s only natural that some healthy rivalries have formed along the way. Each year, Blackstone participates in various sporting matches with other law schools to keep these long-standing grudges alive and well. A real tradition, these matches are always entertaining and are a highlight on the Blackstone sporting calendar.
There are also a number of grudge matches against the Engineers, with tug-of-war, football and rugby all opportunities for us to show that sorry pack of poindexters who really has the courage, strength and resolve to reign supreme over the sporting landscape. More importantly, it’s an opportunity to interact with people from another faculty in a (mostly) friendly and informal social setting, with a barbecue and drinks on the sidelines.
Super Thursday
If you like a grudge match with tensions rising on and off the field, then come down to Super Thursday, where UWA takes on other law societies from Perth universities. In 2010, Blackstone beat the sorry Notre Dame guests at soccer while tens of thousands of screaming fans cheered on the sidelines in between complimentary gourmet tapas and French champagne (aka beer and sausages). Could you think of a better way to kick off the mid-semester break?
Blackstone v Notre Dame Law AFL Match
The annual football grudge match is a favourite of many of the Blackstone stalwarts. A highlight of the sporting calendar, pride is on the line as we take on Notre Dame in an uncompromising game of Australian Rules football. The rivalry, however, is left on the field as the teams enjoy a spot of socialising and rehydration after the game is over.
DLA Phillips Fox Sports Dinner
Sports Dinner this year has been locked in as Wednesday the 31st of August, so mark it in your diaries right now. Traditionally one of the loosest events on the calendar, this year Sports Dinner will be bigger and better than ever. Your sports reps will again be watching you every week and keeping score for the Blackstone Boozelow’s – a prestigious sporting awards night that takes place at the dinner akin to the Brownlow, except far more classy (because Fev declined an invitation). Awards include Male and Female Sportsperson of the Year, Fresher of the Year and the Andy Arnett Players’ Player Award.
So keep in touch via Facebook or What’s Up in the Courtyard, or simply find Ben or Anna around the traps (the library is a good place to start) to get involved and help make 2011 a great year for Blackstone Sports
