A conversation with Afghan human rights activist Suraya Pakzad

What: A conversation with Afghan human rights activist Suraya Pakzad
When: Thursday 9 September, 12.00pm
Where: E-Moot Court

Want to know what is REALLY going on in Afghanistan?

Daily reports from Afghanistan focus on the climbing death toll of NATO forces and the deteriorating security situation, but what is the reality on the ground for civilians nearly nine years after the overthrow of the Taliban?

Thanks to support from Amnesty International, renowned Afghan human rights activist Suraya Pakzad is flying directly from her work with remote Afghan women to speak to Australian audiences.

Named among Time Magazine’s “100 most influential people of 2009″, Ms Pakzad will speak about her ongoing work with Afghanistan’s most disadvantaged women in villages, prisons and shelters; where today young women continue to be jailed for adultery if they complain to the authorities of being raped.

She will talk about the extraordinary obstacles she faces on a daily basis and how the position of Afghan women has not significantly progressed since foreign intervention. Ms Pakzad also raises questions about how the international community can engage on a more equitable and effective level with the people of Afghanistan.

Come along to the E-Moot Court to hear Ms Pakzad on Thursday 9 September at noon for an event hosted by reporter Sophie McNeill, who has documented Ms Pakzad’s work in Afghanistan for SBS television?s Dateline program.

The LexisNexis Constitutional Law Moot is a prestigious national mooting competition open to Australian law students. The final of the competition will be presided over by the Hon Chief Justice Robert French and held in Courtroom 1 at the High Court of Australia. The subject matter of the competition primarily deals with Australian Constitutional Law.

2. Funding

Clayton Utz has generously provided the Blackstone Society with a Competitions Fund which we will use to fund two or three students to compete in the Moot. The fund is worth $2000. The Moot registration cost is $600 per team (of two or three) and includes accommodation, most meals, transfers and some entertainment. Therefore there will be $1400 remaining to cover mooters’ flights to and from Canberra and other expenses. Applicants must be prepared to incur some costs themselves. Successful applicants can of course fundraise, and seek further financial assistance from the University.

Students must have completed Constitutional Law 1 or equivalent to be eligible to apply. Written applications must be submitted by Monday 30 August at 5.00pm. Applications must be submitted:

A panel of three faculty members (Greg Carne, Richard Hooker and Hugo Leith) will assess the written applications. No interviews will be conducted.

4. Further important information

The LexisNexis Constitutional Law Moot is very competitive and provides a unique opportunity to apply your knowledge of Constitutional Law in front of high-quality judges and against the best and brightest students from other universities. It is a very prestigious competition, and as such the Blackstone Society wants to send the students with the best possible chance of successfully representing the UWA Law School. As a guide, students are advised that they will need to devote approximately two weeks prior to September 30 preparing for the Moot. The mooting problem is traditionally complex and deals with several issues relating to Australian Constitutional Law. Therefore, before submitting an application, make sure that you will have the time to devote to the competition at this time of semester.

The 2010 UBS Investment Banking Challenge will be run at seven leading campuses for the study of finance in Australia; The Universities of Adelaide, Melbourne, Monash, New South Wales, Queensland, Sydney and Western Australia.

The Challenge offers students an invaluable opportunity:

  • To gain hands-on experience of working as an analyst in an Investment Bank
  • To win an internship interview with UBS, the market leader in investment banking in the Australian market
  • To win a generous cash prize!

Participating teams are provided with a case study, developed by UBS bankers and based on a real M&A transaction. Later that week, they will be invited to present to a panel of judges for 15-minutes and answer questions typical of those posed to a junior analyst at UBS.

Four teams will be selected at each campus to participate in the Campus Final, and the winning team at each campus will compete in the National Final, to be held at our offices in Sydney. As well as presenting, finalists will be invited to spend a morning with UBS to learn more about careers in Investment Banking (and also ask for some advice ahead of the competition!).
