The hours of work can be flexible around study and other commitments.  Usually we have had casual positions allowing students to work the number of hours they wish to during the week, around their study commitments.

We have had a number of students employed over the past 5 years, and several have worked here whilst completing their College of Laws requirements & then as solicitors.  At present, we have one student working two days a week, but would like to have another student of one to two days a week.

iLaw is offering up to three (3) vacation clerkships during the winter at its North Perth office. This will be an excellent opportunity for students who wish to develop their legal skills and gain an insight into a career in law. Ideal applicants will be reliable, and have completed their first (1st) or second (2nd) year of study in law.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate initiative, excellent written and communication skills, and a high attention to detail. Applicants must also be prepared to work diligently in a professional team environment. Successful applicants will be delegated to work with the firm’s heads of department on important matters, and are likely to be exposed to at least two areas of law during their clerkship. Aspects of this work will include legal research, letter writing, drafting, and administrative support. At the conclusion of their clerkship, a special certificate of completion will be provided in return for their efforts.

Professional Assistants

These full time positions (4) will provide applicants with a unique opportunity to work closely with the most senior legal officers within government. Responsibilities include assisting in drafting legal opinions, submissions and correspondence and involvement in law reform. The word is interesting, diverse and challenging and will provide an excellent basis for a successful career in law.

Successful applicants will be appointed for two years beginning in January 2013. Following completion of the appointment Professional Assistants can reasonably expect, subject to performance, to be offered Articles with the State Solicitor and to be employed through their restricted practice period.

Applicants ideally should be in their penultimate year of study of law and be prepared to complete their study part-time over the two year period. Applications are also invited from graduates. Highly developed research, analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills are essential. Applicants’ academic results should be such that applicants can reasonably anticipate being invited into an Honours programme in law.

Law Graduate Training Program

State Solicitor’s Office will accept applications from law graduates (up to 7 positions) between 30 April and 15 June 2012 for its highly acclaimed Article Clerkship program for 2013. For the first time the State Solicitor’s Office will expand its law graduate program to accept applications from:

1. Law graduates wishing to undertake Articles

These traditional legal traineeships will involve 12 months as an Articled Clerk inclusive of the required external practical legal training with the Leo Cussen Institute (paid for by the State Solicitor’s Office). After admission these graduates will transition to one and a half years as a Legal Officer.

2. Law graduates who have completed the course work component of an approved practical legal training course (provided by the College of Law) but have not been admitted to practice law.

These graduates will still undertake a 12 month legal traineeship as an Articled Clerk but will not have to undertake further external practical legal training provided that the approved course work is completed prior to registration of articles. After admission at the conclusion of the Articles these graduates will transition to one and a half years as a Legal Officer.

3. Law graduates who have completed the requirements of an approved practical legal training course (such as that provided by the College of Law) and have already been admitted to practice and wish to undertake a Legal Officer Traineeship.

These law graduates will for 12 months undertake the same legal traineeship programme as Articled Clerks and at the same pay. Following completion of this traineeship, these graduates will transition to one and a half years as a Legal Officer.
