The Award is offered annually, to commemorate the work of Grace Vaughan – teacher, social worker and parliamentarian – in the area of social justice and human rights.  The award aims to:

• support activities characteristic of Grace’s own determination in qualifying herself to serve others; and
• provide benefits for those who share her concern for social justice and human rights.

Value

The award is valued at $2,500.

Eligibility

The following are eligible to apply for the Award:

• individuals wishing to pursue studies in the area of social justice and human rights at the University of Western Australia;
• individuals with a demonstrated scholarly or professional concern for social justice and human rights wishing to travel in Australia or overseas for further studies likely to be of benefit to the community; and
• individuals, practitioners and/or early career professionals with a demonstrated commitment in a particular field of social justice and human rights wishing to pursue studies or activities for the purpose of their professional development.

What is Blackstone Special Projects?

Blackstone Special Projects is a new unit of the Society’s governance structure. It is intended that Special Projects will provide research and analysis services to the Blackstone Executive on subjects such as education, equity and careers. Projects taken on by the unit might include helping to draft submissions to the Law School on curriculum reform, conducting research on graduate recruitment practices, and helping to draft Blackstone policy on social and cultural issues. Essentially, Special Projects will exist to assist Blackstone on an as-needs basis with challenging and high-value research tasks so that Blackstone can represent students effectively to the Law School and the wider legal community.

How would Special Projects function?

The Special Projects Officer would be responsible for the running of Blackstone Special Projects. The Blackstone Executive might propose a research topic or initiative, and the Special Projects Officer would then take on responsibility for completing the task with the assistance from the rest of the Special Projects unit.

In its first year of operation, it is intended that Special Projects will primarily be shaped and structured by the Special Projects Officer. The successful applicant may wish to recruit and run a formal committee of fellow students; alternately, they may wish to rely on a more amorphous group, recruiting one group of students to assist with one task, and another to oversee a different initiative.

The requirements for the role

The successful applicant for the Special Projects Officer position will be a law student in their third year or above (second year for graduate LLB students). They will have demonstrated an ability to work independently and as part of a team, to conduct high-quality research and to function in positions of leadership.

This is a new position and a new initiative. Blackstone is particularly interested to hear from students who have strong ideas about how to make this new unit thrive.
