iLaw’s North Perth office are seeking applications from suitable applicants who wish to
obtain a work experience placement commencing in March 2012. This is a great opportunity
for an ambitious future solicitor to get their foot in the door, develop their legal skills and
gain an insight into a career in law. Ideal applicants will be available to work for at least two
days per week.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate initiative, excellent written and communication
skills, and a high attention to detail. Applicants must also be reliable, and be prepared to
work diligently in a professional team environment. Successful applicants will be delegated
to work with the firm’s heads of department on important matters, and are likely to be
exposed to at least two areas of law during their placement. Aspects of this work will
include legal research, letter writing, drafting, and administrative support.

The AVERT Family Violence training package has been developed to provide a multi-disciplinary training package in family violence that encourages collaboration between students and professionals who are working in the family law system. The aim of the training package is to provide people within or students interested in the family law system, with a sound and practical understanding of family violence, its impact and the appropriate strategies for responding which promotes safety for all involved.

The five workshops offered in 2012 are: Responding to Cultural Diversity, Risk Assessment, Dimensions, Dynamics & Impact of Family Violence, Engaging People who Use Violence, Legal Frameworks. To register see: Family Violence Training & Registration Form

In partnership with Blackstone Volunteering in 2012 Asetts is establishing a small Client Advocacy Service, aimed at helping clients specifically with visa applications for reunification and housing issues.

The ALSA Conference is the highlight of the ALSA Calendar. Held from the 9^th – 16^th July, the Conference will be attended by more than 500 law students from Australia, New Zealand, and South East Asia. It is one of the largest student conference in Australia, and the only conference of its kind for law students. Hosted through the combined efforts of all six Victorian Universities in 2012, the theme for the Conference is ‘Advancing Australia’s Future Leaders’.

 The Conference is home to the national finals of 6 legal competitions. Over 350 legal professionals evaluate the performance of our competitors each year ranging from solicitors to Chief Justices. The ALSA Conference will feature a range of other activities, including Australian Legal Education Forums, meetings of ALSA Council, Opening and Closing Gala Dinners with keynote speakers, Speakers’ Forums, social events and day trips.

A clerkship at Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation offers unique opportunities, including:

Vacation Clerkships: up to 12 legal clerkships (non-remunerated) offered annually, held during winter and summer university vacations. These are usually for 2 weeks in the Perth office. However if an applicant can provide their own travel and accommodation a vacation clerkship can be completed in one of our regional offices.

The Argyle Ballroom at the Parmelia Hilton will become a battlefield as a team of students tackle the giants of the legal profession on the topic “That the law is better on TV than in real life.”

Representing the profession will be the Hon. Wayne Martin, Chief Justice of Western Australia, Joseph McGrath, WA Director of Public Prosecutions, and Peter Ward, special counsel at Blake Dawson.

Fighting for the student view will be Andrew Gannon, Olivia Loxley and Ben Willesee.

Good food, good wine, good company and good laughs. The 2011 Blake Dawson Law Dinner Debate is a showdown not to be missed.
