Space Law Lecture Slides

Applications now open for appointed positions!

Blackstone is currently seeking applications for the following appointed positions. Please email your application of no more than 300 words to email hidden; JavaScript is required by November 25. Applications should briefly outline which position you’d like, why you want that particular position and why you think you’re suited to the role. Except where otherwise stated, there is no prior experience needed for these roles. The 2012 committee strongly supports the idea of an inclusive student society and strongly recommends everyone to get involved, regardless of your prior exposure to the society. These roles offer students an invaluable opportunity to work in a team environment, develop leadership experience, improve their time management and liaise with firm representatives. Committee Positions:

Pre-Law director (senior committee member):

The pre-law director will be responsible for engaging undergraduate students through a variety of medium, including social events and competitions. The role will be somewhat self-defined and will require a motivated and innovative individual with a vision for the role. The pre-law director will also chair an undergraduate sub-committee.

 

Promotions Officer:

The promotions officer will be responsible for co-ordinating all of the society’s promotional activities. This will include, but is not limited to, creating posters and updating the website and facebook pages. Graphic design (poster) skills are essential for this role. Website administration will be taught to the successful applicant by our IT officer.

 

Office bearer positions:

Careers handbook editor and four sub-editors:

The successful applicants should be available to work on the handbook over February.

 

Onyx editor and three sub-editors:

The Onyx editor team is tasked with working with the publications officer to publish three editions of the official Blackstone law journal. Some editor experience is preferred for the position of editor.

 

Publications officer:

The publications officer will work with editors and assist in the layout of publications such as Onyx, the Careers Handbook and Briefs. Graphic design and in-design skills are essential.

 

Equity sub-committee:

The following sub-committee positions are available:

-          Mental health officer;

-          Indigenous students’ representative;

-          International students’ representative;

-          Graduate and mature age students’ representative.

Competitions co-ordinators and organisers:

Co-ordinators will handle the preparation of competition materials, the draw of competitors and other logistics. Organisers work with the co-ordinators to run competitions on the evening, including catering, set-up of rooms and registering competitors. Positions are available for each of the following:

Mallesons and the Red Cross Presents: ‘Make Nuclear Weapons the Target’

Mallesons Stephen Jaques and the Red Cross presents their second lecture of the year, on the legal and humanitarian imperatives for rendering nuclear weapons illegal.

The speakers include Dr Chris Hubbard (Senior Lecturer, Curtin University), Mariko Ishii (third generation Hiroshima survivor and anti-nuclear activist), and Dr Peter Underwood (Medical Association for Prevention of War VP).

The event is free of charge and light refreshments will be served.

The Final will be held in the Supreme Court on Wednesday 24 August, with Martin CJ presiding. Please arrive from 6.30 pm for a 7pm start. Drinks and refreshments served afterwards.

3 National Family Law Moot – support UWA this Friday 19 August at 4.30pm!

The UWA team, made up of Trish Yang, Alicia Yap, Ying Siow and Scott Young, will be competing against the University of Adelaide in the National Family Law Moot Competition this Friday. Come down to courtroom 3.5 of the WA Family Court to cheer them on if you aren’t getting boozy at the Academic Challenge ;)

Tuesday, 16.08.2011, Mallesons Stephen Jaques at 1pm, Law LR15. Research Opportunity with the Ethnic Disability Advocacy Centre (EDAC)This is an opportunity to contribute your legal research and writing skills to the valuable work done by the EDAC in disability law and
policy reform. Teams or partners can work collaboratively on a research paper spanning topics such as the operation of anti
discrimination legislation, access to housing, legal representation and disability support services and the situation for people with a
disability within immigration detention and the prison systems.  Support will be provided to you throughout the process, and when
submitted at the end of semester, your contributions will be published in a booklet to guide EDAC employees and advocates.

6. Work with Australia’s Largest Humanitarian Organisation to Provide Migrant Support

There is an ongoing need for volunteers to assist newly arrived migrants settle in to the community. As a volunteer in the Migrant
Support Program, you will be provided with Red Cross and program specific training, and may have access to other trainings such as an ESL teaching short course. You can indicate the times you are available to volunteer and will be assisting the work of Red Cross
Case Workers by attending airport pick ups, housing set ups, providing orientation assistance, transport and accessibility help or home tutoring.

7. Be a Mentor to a Survivor of Torture and Trauma

Opportunities still exist to become a part of the UWA ASETTS (Association for the Survivors of Torture and Trauma) team. After completing ASETTS and migrant community support training, you will be linked through a case worker to a person of refugee background who will benefit from the support, knowledge and friendship you can provide. And it’s guaranteed you’ll receive as much in return! This program is most suitable to someone who can offer a long term commitment (continuing beyond the semester).

8.  Squire Sanders FREE lunch mixer for Penultimate Year Students- Wednesday 1-2

The Perth Minter Ellison office is combining with top 25 global law firm Squire Sanders, and will be providing a free lunch for penultimate year students to promote the new firm.

3.  4th & 5th Yr Cocktail Party
The Clayton Utz Cocktail party for Fourth and Fifth year students is the perfect remedy to beat the post-holiday comedown. Come and mingle and have some divine cocktails whilst catching up on holiday gossip.Held at 1907 Cocktail Bar on Thursday the 11th of August from 7.30-12pm, this night ensures to be a very classy event.
Tickets are only available from the Blackstone desk and are $25 for members and $35 for non members. This includes a generous amount of cocktails and canapes.
4.  Competition How-To Sessions
(a) IHL Mooting: Tuesday 2 August at 12 pm in Law LR 1
James Marzec, half of last year’s winning team, will be there to offer hints and tips about the competition. The sign up sheet will go up during the session and will fill up within the week, so make sure to grab a spot for your team. The moot question will be emailed to competitors on Monday 8 August.
(b) Allens Arthur Robinson Negotiation Competition: Wednesday 3 August at 1 pm in the Moot Court
Rachel Joseph, a lawyer in Commercial Litigation & Dispute Resolution at Allens, is coming down to give advice on effective negotiation strategies. The sign up sheet WILL fill up within the hour, so you must attend to ensure your team gets a spot.
(c) Corrs Chambers Westgarth First Year Mooting Competition: Tuesday 9 August at 1 pm in Law LR 2
Last year’s winner, Isobel Rosenstreich, will talk about her experience and offer mooting tips and advice. The sign up sheet will go up in the session, so make sure you grab a spot. The competition is open to all students taking Criminal Law, Torts or Contract and is a great opportunity to gain mooting experience.

5.  Blackstone common facilities
The kitchen next to the bathrooms has been cleaned and is now very usable!  The Blackstone common room also offers a microwave, kettle, toaster and free tea and coffee facilities.  Please treat these facilities as your own but be considerate of other students- don’t leave a mess!
There are also couches, four player nintendo, a foosball table, study tables and a vending machine in the Blackstone common room.  Have fun!

6.  Other things of note
Relay for life
Relay for Life@UWA is on again in 2011! Last year’s Relay raised over $100,000 for the Cancer Council, and this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better! Relay@UWA is a fun way to give back to the community, so get your friends together and register a team at www.relayforlife.org.au.  To find out more about Relay for Life, head to the Info Session on Tuesday (2 August), 1pm, in the Sue Boyd Room.
Justice WA
Are you interested in criminal law? Are you interested in helping free an innocent person from prison? JusticeWA is looking for a group of volunteers to assist at upcoming events. These events include the “Justice for All Day” charity fundraising day and the International Justice Conference in early 2012. Justice for All Day is a fundraising day held every February and the International Justice Conference is a word first event which will bring together leading Australian and International lawyers, forensic experts, investigative journalists and high profile exonerated individuals. Dedicated student volunteers will also get the opportunity to network with leading professionals and long term may have the opportunity to clerk on cases for criminal lawyers, including one of Australia’s best QC’s. 2011 Blake Dawson Law Dinner Debate

On Friday 13 May, it’s a clash of the titans in the 2011 Blake Dawson Law Dinner Debate!

The Argyle Ballroom at the Parmelia Hilton will become a battlefield as a team of students tackle the giants of the legal profession on the topic “That the law is better on TV than in real life.”

Representing the profession will be the Hon. Wayne Martin, Chief Justice of Western Australia, Joseph McGrath, WA Director of Public Prosecutions, and Peter Ward, special counsel at Blake Dawson.

Fighting for the student view will be Andrew Gannon, Olivia Loxley and Ben Willesee.

Good food, good wine, good company and good laughs. The 2011 Blake Dawson Law Dinner Debate is a showdown not to be missed.

Tickets are $75 for members; $90 for non-members. The price includes a two course meal and a four-hour drinks package. Tickets are on sale outside the Blackstone Common Room from 12-2pm, Monday through Thursday.

2012 DEEWR Graduate Program

The 2012 Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) Graduate Program is a ten month learning and development program offering placements in a diverse range of teams, giving exposure to the variety of programs and policies carried out within DEEWR.

Nominations for Junior Representative Positions Now Open!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR A JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE POSITION ON THE 2011 BLACKSTONE SOCIETY COMMITTE

1. Fill out a signed and seconded nomination form and deposit in the labelled mailbox in the common room.  IT IS STRONGLY RECOMENDED THAT CANDIDATES DO NOT NOMINATE FOR MORE THAN ONE POSITION.  Contrary to popular belief this actually reduces your chances of success by diluting your votes.

2. Create an A4 poster and deposit in the labelled mailbox in the common room

3. Write a short profile of up to 300 words explaining your vision for the role and send it to email hidden; JavaScript is required and email hidden; JavaScript is required

4. Be aware that under election regulations the only campaigning allowed is in person and outside the courtyard (ie no lecture bashing, facebook, emails etc)

5.  The voting will be counted in order of education; social; careers.  This means that if you are crazy popular enough to get enough quota for two positions you will be elected to the one first in the order

Job Descriptions (as per the Blackstone Society Constitution)

Junior representatives will spend most of their time doing work for their relevant sub committee, which will be chaired by the VP and will include the president and admin VP.
They will also be heavily involved in committee business, and will need to be available to attend weekly meetings Blackstone events.
Candidates should realise that Blackstone involves a considerable time commitment.

Volunteer researchers wanted: Mental Health Law Centre

The Mental Health Law Centre is currently looking for law students to assist with legal research and drafting law reform submissions (to be done from home).

As a research volunteer, you would be:

  • given priority placement when future volunteer vacancies
    arise in our office;
  • recognised in MHLC’s Annual Report;
  • welcome to attend our volunteer training session(s);
  • authorised to attend Mental Health Review Board hearings
    with a solicitor (where appropriate);
  • promoting human rights by helping draft law reform
    submissions to redress two of the most iniquitous statutes in WA ; and
  • maybe find a great honours thesis topic.

If you would like to contribute, the MHLC would welcome your response with an expression of interest. Please send  a cover letter, your CV and a copy of your most recent academic transcript for consideration.

Application Process
VP positions require a two page written application and will be appointed through an interview panel consisting of the entire executive.  These interviews will take place in either the start of the study week or (more likely) after your exams have finished.
Other positions will require a one page application and may involve an interview.  These appointments will be carried out by the relevant executive members.
