Women in the Law Mentor Scheme

Since 2006, the Blackstone Society has administered the Women in the Law Mentor Scheme, which is designed to match female law students with women in the legal field in Western Australia.

In the last few years, the Scheme has expanded to include women from more and more diverse backgrounds, such as legal academics and independent practitioners.

In 2010, the Blackstone Society is continuing the Women in the Law Mentor Scheme and involving women from even more diverse backgrounds, such as political figures and judicial officers. We hope that this interaction with professionals in other law-based careers will give direction to law students who do not wish to practise law upon completion of their law degree.

The scheme aims to match students as closely as possible with a woman in the law working in the field of your dreams. Mentees and mentors will have a chance to meet at the Launch Party on 26 March 2010, where they will have a chance to network with other mentors and mentees, and continue their association throughout the year at their own initiative.  The Scheme will wrap up at the annual Women in the Law Breakfast, to be held on 23 September 2010, which promises to be a valuable and insightful experience for mentors and mentees alike.

How to get involved

To sign up for the Women in the Law Mentor Scheme, look for sign-up sheets in the Law Common Room, or watch out for emails from the Blackstone Equity Officers.

If you wish to register your interest early, please send an email through to equity@blackstone.asn.au.

Cost

The only cost associated with the Scheme is the purchasing tickets to the Launch Party and Breakfast.

NOTE: Male law students are encouraged to attend all Women in the Law events and network with the mentors and mentees. Each event boasts prominent keynote speakers and an excellent opportunity to make contacts within the legal field.
