This highly regarded scheme not only provides training and practical experience in preparing criminal injuries compensation claims (“CIC”) but also provides students the opportunity to experience the industry at a personal level.

This program is open to students who are in their third year and above, and expressions of interest should be sent to email hidden; JavaScript is required or by telephone on (08) 9222 2839. No CVs or academic transcripts are required, but please advise Lucie if you have worked on matters relating to the Stolen Generation or Redress WA.

Priority is given to final year law students, the order of which expressions of interests have been made, and when the department’s criminal record check and working with children check is lodged and cleared.

The upcoming program is scheduled to start mid March 2012 and finish in June 2012. Expressions of interest will be taken until Feb 10th, so be quick!

Committee Positions:

Pre-Law director (senior committee member):

The pre-law director will be responsible for engaging undergraduate students through a variety of medium, including social events and competitions. The role will be somewhat self-defined and will require a motivated and innovative individual with a vision for the role. The pre-law director will also chair an undergraduate sub-committee.

Promotions Officer:

The promotions officer will be responsible for co-ordinating all of the society’s promotional activities. This will include, but is not limited to, creating posters and updating the website and facebook pages. Graphic design (poster) skills are essential for this role. Website administration will be taught to the successful applicant by our IT officer.

Careers handbook editor and four sub-editors:

The successful applicants should be available to work on the handbook over February.

Onyx editor and three sub-editors:

The Onyx editor team is tasked with working with the publications officer to publish three editions of the official Blackstone law journal. Some editor experience is preferred for the position of editor.

Publications officer:

The publications officer will work with editors and assist in the layout of publications such as Onyx, the Careers Handbook and Briefs. Graphic design and in-design skills are essential.

Equity sub-committee:

The following sub-committee positions are available:

-          Mental health officer;

-          Indigenous students’ representative;

-          International students’ representative;

-          Graduate and mature age students’ representative.

Competitions co-ordinators and organisers:

Co-ordinators will handle the preparation of competition materials, the draw of competitors and other logistics. The Award is offered annually, to commemorate the work of Grace Vaughan – teacher, social worker and parliamentarian – in the area of social justice and human rights.  The award aims to:

• support activities characteristic of Grace’s own determination in qualifying herself to serve others; and
• provide benefits for those who share her concern for social justice and human rights.

The award is valued at $2,500.

Eligibility

The following are eligible to apply for the Award:

• individuals wishing to pursue studies in the area of social justice and human rights at the University of Western Australia;
• individuals with a demonstrated scholarly or professional concern for social justice and human rights wishing to travel in Australia or overseas for further studies likely to be of benefit to the community; and
• individuals, practitioners and/or early career professionals with a demonstrated commitment in a particular field of social justice and human rights wishing to pursue studies or activities for the purpose of their professional development.
