Now in its eighth year, Business Icon aims to open up the doors to many more participants through the creation of the Business Icon 48-hour challenge. In this challenge, teams will have 48 hours to create, develop and deliver an activity that raises money for charity in an entrepreneurial way. The winners will go on to compete in a 6 day competition in Melbourne in September.

The hours of work can be flexible around study and other commitments.  Usually we have had casual positions allowing students to work the number of hours they wish to during the week, around their study commitments.

We have had a number of students employed over the past 5 years, and several have worked here whilst completing their College of Laws requirements & then as solicitors.  At present, we have one student working two days a week, but would like to have another student of one to two days a week.

iLaw is offering up to three (3) vacation clerkships during the winter at its North Perth office. This will be an excellent opportunity for students who wish to develop their legal skills and gain an insight into a career in law. Ideal applicants will be reliable, and have completed their first (1st) or second (2nd) year of study in law.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate initiative, excellent written and communication skills, and a high attention to detail. Applicants must also be prepared to work diligently in a professional team environment. Successful applicants will be delegated to work with the firm’s heads of department on important matters, and are likely to be exposed to at least two areas of law during their clerkship. Aspects of this work will include legal research, letter writing, drafting, and administrative support. At the conclusion of their clerkship, a special certificate of completion will be provided in return for their efforts.

Given the volume of legislation produced by Australian parliaments each year, is legal practise bereft of  the common law? Indeed, the High Court’s ‘Malaysian Solution’ Case,   Plaintiff M70/2011 and Momcilovic case, illustrate the real world importance and complexity of legislation and statutory interpretation. This twilight seminar will adopt a practical perspective focussing on three important areas of statutory interpretation; judicial approaches to the legislative text; recent changes to Interpretation Acts and the reality of advising clients and crafting statutory arguments for litigation.

Philippa Brown, a graduate of the Law School, has recently undertaken a six month secondment from Ashurst Australia to the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency in the Northern Territory (http://www.naaja.org.au).  Philippa has kindly agreed to come and talk to students and share her experience of working to improve access to justice for Indigenous people living in remote areas of Australia.

Philippa graduated from UWA in 2007 and joined Ashurst Australia in 2008, working as an employment lawyer in the Perth office.  In 2011, Philippa volunteered for a secondment to NAAJA, working on civil matters such as:

• complaints about police conduct;
• debt and consumer matters;
• employment disputes or queries;
• acting for family members in coronial inquiries;
• acting in relation to medical negligence claims and complaints to the health commission; and
• assisting victims of crime and clients injured in motor vehicle accidents to seek compensation.

Although based in Katherine, Philippa spent a large amount of time visiting remote communities, holding “bush clinics”, or visiting clients (eg to take statements, discuss matters, or facilitate meetings with police superintendents).  One side benefit of travelling to bush clinics (by single engine aeroplane) is that Philippa’s phobia of flying in commercial jets has now been cured.
