Blackstone Sport

There are many opportunities to participate in Blackstone’s keenly contested and high-spirited social sporting events in 2010! Each Wednesday afternoon, Blackstone fields both male, female and sometimes mixed teams in the University-wide interfaculty sports competition. We also have a number of ‘grudge matches’, and other sporting afternoons throughout the year. The games are fun, highly sociable and a great way to meet people.

The 2010 Blackstone Sports Reps are:

* Mita Hill

Grudge Matches

The Blackstone Society has a long and rich history at UWA, and it’s only natural that some healthy rivalries have formed along the way. Each year, Blackstone participates in various sporting matches with other faculties and law schools to keep these long-standing grudges alive and well. A real tradition, these matches are always entertaining and are a highlight on the Blackstone sporting calendar.

Super Thursday

If you like a grudge match with tensions rising on and off the field, then come down to Super Thursday, where UWA takes on other law societies from Perth universities. In 2009, Blackstone beat the sorry Notre Dame guests at soccer while tens of thousands of screaming fans cheered on the sidelines in between complimentary gourmet tapas and French champagne (aka beer and sausages). Could you think of a better way to kick off the mid-semester break?

Blackstone v Murdoch Law AFL Match

The annual football grudge match is a favourite of many of the Blackstone stalwarts. A highlight of the sporting calendar, pride is on the line as we take on Murdoch University in a tough game of Australian Rules football. The rivalry is left on the field though as the teams enjoy a spot socialising and rehydration after the game is over.

Law v Engineers

Law students and engineers have enjoyed a spirited rivalry for many years. This fierce rivalry manifests itself it several ways throughout the year. In 2010, the first major showdown is the ultimate test of strength; The Tug of War. This traditional event is a perfect opportunity for law students to show that when it comes to spirit, courage and resolve, their engineering counterparts do not even come close. To put it beyond doubt we face up with our most bitter of rivals again in second semester in Men’s rugby and Women’s AFL. At the end of the day, it is a chance to get out there and have fun with your friends, new and old, with some food and refreshments on the sidelines.

Interfaculty Sport

Blackstone sport, while spirited and competitive, is more importantly about getting in and having a go. It’s a great way to make friends and meet new people, as well as keeping fit and learning new sports. We will be putting a fearsome lineup out on the park every week, endeavouring to rekindle our form in 2006, which saw both the girls and guys winning their respective competitions. The Goyder (male) and Strickland (female) cups are ready to return to their home in the Blackstone common room.

Sports Dinner

One of the wildest events of the year is also one of the last, winding up a typically successful and hugely fun sporting year for Blackstone. This year, your sports reps will again be watching you every week and keeping score for the Blackstone Boozelow’s – a prestigious sporting awards night that takes place at the dinner akin to the Brownlow’s, except more classy. Awards include Male and Female Sportsperson of the Year, Fresher of the Year and the Andy Arnett Players’ Player Award.
