Getting Involved
Blackstone is not only for a select few, but for everybody. Blackstone is your student society, and the product of many years of UWA law students’ commitment to each other, and to the idea of trying to get the most out of their time at university. So continue that fun, that commitment, that tradition, and get involved in 2009 and take ownership of your society. There are incredible things on offer at uni, and even more incredible people to share them with. You just have to open up that drawer and grab a spoon.

Being an Active Member
The simplest way to get involved in Blackstone is to take an active interest in what we do, and what we can do for our members. If you have an idea, suggest it. If you have some feedback, give it. As a Society, we can only be as representative as our members are participative, and as such, always welcome constructive comments and suggestions. So don’t be silent, be pro-active.
Also, talk to people in your classes, in the courtyard, in the library; and even if you don’t know them, a simple hello can change all that. Blackstone is all about building a community within UWA Law School, and just by being friendly to your fellow students and staff members, you are contributing positively to Blackstone, and Law School life.
So take ownership and feel proud of your Society and your Law School; for what it has achieved, and what it is yet to accomplish. You now know why you should do it, how you can do it, so all that remains is for you to get out there and actually do it!
Blackstone Committee
The Blackstone Committee are 25 people fully committed to providing law students with all the fun educational, sporting and social fun that they are accustomed to. We meet every Tuesday at 1pm in the Blackstone Common Room and all students are encouraged to attend if they’re interested in what we’re up to or would like to air a grievance.
Towards the end of Semester 2 each year, the Blackstone Society runs their annual elections for the incoming Blackstone Committee. There are 21 elected positions and 4 appointed office bearer positions that are determined upon election of the new office bearers. Blackstone encourages everybody to get involved in the running of the society, and if you’re a friendly, outgoing and interested law student then being on committee is the perfect opportunity for you.
The 2009 fresher elections will take place in Week 8 of Semester 1.
The 2008 committee elections will take place in Week 10 of Semester 2. Candidates must submit their nominations and attend the Blackstone Annual General Meeting to confirm their nomination.
For more information about the elections or getting involved with the Blackstone Committee, email the President (James Eley) at president@blackstone.asn.au.
Blackstone Sub-Committees
The Law Ball subcommittee is a popular way to get involved in the fun side of life. It’ a lot of fun planning the biggest event on the Blackstone social calendar, and a great way to meet heaps of new people and get involved in Blackstone for the first time. Email the super-friendly Social Vice President Tim Clarke on socialvp@blackstone.asn.au for more information about signing up for the subcommittee of dreams.
We also have an Equity Subcommittee which meets regularly to try and make the Law School a more happy and equitable place to be for its huge diversity of students. To join the Equity Subcommittee, email our friendly Equity Officers, Raph De Vietri or Kate Oosterhof at equity@blackstone.asn.au.
