In semester one 2012, Blackstone will be facilitating study group sessions for undergraduate “pre-law” students. These study groups will be run for students enrolled in law units which form part of a Law major (Business Law, Law and Society) or are broadening units within the New Courses structure.
The study groups are being run for LAWS1110 – Crime and Society, and LAWS1120 – Australian Legal Principles and Institutions. Each study group runs for one hour between the hours of 4-6pm Monday and Tuesday during scheduled weeks throughout the semester.
The aim of these study groups is to give students an opportunity to discuss amongst their peers what they have been learning in class and any problems or concerns that they might have. The groups are not intended to be tutorials – the facilitators are not there to teach. Instead, the facilitators are there to give helpful advice about study skills that will aid them in their chosen units.
The content of the study group sessions has two main components. The first is a ‘study skill focus’. Each week that a study group session is scheduled, the first fifteen minutes will be spent talking about an essential university study skill, including: essay writing, research skills, exam preparation and time management. The second component of the groups involves a free and informal discussion about what students have been learning in lectures, readings and tutorials. The study groups will give students a chance to solidify their understanding of concepts learned and also talk about any difficulties they are having with the course material.
The groups are designed to be informal, relaxed and friendly – anyone enrolled in the above units is welcome!
