Semester Two
Penultimate year cocktail party
DATE: Thursday 11th August 2011
In a belief that the penultimate year students are in some way classier or more adherent to prevailing social norms than those in lower years, Blackstone each year puts on a cocktail party for these students at one of the venues around town that caters to these types of functions. This year the event has expanded to include 4th years as well as fifth years. It will be on Thursday August 11 at 1907, so make sure you get your tickets early to ensure you don’t miss out.
Sports dinner
DATE: Wednesday 31st August 2011
Traditionally one of the loosest events on the calendar, this year the DLA Piper Sports Dinner will be bigger and better than ever. Your sports reps have been watching you every week and keeping score for the Blackstone Boozelow’s – a prestigious sporting awards night that takes place at the dinner akin to the Brownlow, except far more classy (because Fev declined an invitation). Awards include Male and Female Sportsperson of the Year, Fresher of the Year and the Andy Arnett Players’ Player Award. The dinner is on Thursday August 31, probably at Han’s Northbridge (if we can trick them into letting us make a booking), the night of the Athletics interfac fixture, and you’re welcome to come down even if you don’t know your football from your foosball.
Third year dinner
DATE: Thursday 8th September 2011
Third Year Dinner is a good chance for students of Property and Trusts to get together and have a good time before the real work of semester kicks in. A slightly classier event than past dinners (the wine might be in bottles!), this will be a really good night out. Taking place at a yet to be decided venue on Thursday September 8, make sure you get your tickets early.
Amazing race
DATE: Friday 16th September 2011
An obstacle course-cum-scavenger hunt takes sixteen teams of four through the streets of Perth in the bid to be crowned Norton Rose Amazing Race champions for 2011. Along the way, competitors will be asked to demonstrate a series of ‘skills’ in order to be given their next clue. There are time bonuses (and penalties) for teams who fulfil other tasks along the way. Persistent but unsubstantiated rumours of unsportsmanlike conduct (read: cheating) have dogged the sponsor teams for some time, and it is unlikely that this year will be any different so be on your guard. Sign-ups can be done for individuals, pairs, trios or full teams, and allocations will be one closer to the day. The race will take place on Friday September 16, with sign-ups in the weeks before.
Law ball
DATE: Friday 7th October 2011
Who says that murder’s not an art? The 2011 Blake Dawson Law Ball will this year take place on Friday October 7 in the Astral Ballroom at Burswood. A night of Chicago-inspired debauchery awaits the 550 students lucky enough to secure their tickets. So slick your hair, wear your buckle shoes and make sure you get your table together early for what promises to be – as always – the highlight of the Blackstone social calendar.
Final year dinner
DATE: Thursday 27th October 2011
After five or six (or in some cases seven) years of law school, the Final Year Dinner gives the graduating class one last chance to reminisce and celebrate (finally) finishing. With a high-profile guest speaker (in 2010 Chief Justice French) and a valedictory address from one of the students in the graduating class, this event is traditionally a mix of happiness and sadness for all who attend.
Courtyard show
DATE: Friday 4th November 2011
Courtyard Show (or CYS for those of you cool enough to slip street lingo into your everyday vernacular) is once again taking place on the last teaching week of semester, Friday November 4. Featuring a special appearance from the new and improved (stabilised) fountain, Courtyard promises to be as big as ever. With tickets generally selling out early, make sure you get your hands on yours lest you experience the keen sting of disappointment.
